Ah yes, the famous 1960's anime show has returned. Bigger and brighter than before. This extremely colorful film adapts a beloved Japanese anime called "Speed Racer". I enjoy the show, even though it's a bit cheesy.
The new film boils the show down very nicely, including well-known characters such as "Pops", "Speed", and "Trixie", as well as including (characters that were annoying in the anime, but much more endurable in the movie) Chim-Chim and Spritle. It's a very colorful--
Did I say colorful? More like sensory overload. If anyone has epilepsy, do not, I repeat, DO NOT see this movie. Within five minutes or less of the movie starting, you already have a flashing checkerboard, extremely bright neon colors, and constantly moving pictures. And it builds throughout the whole film. An hour after the movie, and I'm still a bit in shock over the colors and intense flashes it presented.
Otherwise, a very pleasant movie experience. The only thing I have a problem with is that it does have cussing in it, and Spritle flips off one of the bad guys. It's surprising that they would let this into a movie that was obviously geared towards kids. It was distracting and not needed in an otherwise excellent film.
I mean, it's Speed Racer! I would recommend this film for 10 and up, mainly because the plot may be a bit too complicated for the younger kids--there were a couple of points in the film where I was "Huh--wait, what just happened?", and there is an extremely long back-story in the beginning, but it is needed.
Otherwise, go see it on the big screen--it's worth it. Now, I hope they make it in 3-D. THAT would be awesome!
