At about 11:05 Tuesday evening a shot was fired into the front door of a residence hall on the campus of Gordon College .
No one was injured in the incident.
A student was in the common [living room] area of the residence called Commons A, which is separate from the student's rooms, at the time but was not struck by the bullet. The bullet did however shatter one side of the glass entrance door before traveling across the room and piercing a wall. [Bullet hole is still there] The resident director, who is on duty from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., was manning the desk at the time of the incident.
According to campus police, three to four black males who were in a white Nissan Maxima drove past the front door of Commons A. One of the males in the car fired once before driving off and firing several more time as they drove out of the parking lot. Police found several shell casings in the parking lot which appear to have been fired from a .380 semi-automatic handgun.
Police are still investigating the incident but think it may have started at an off campus party which was attended by several female students. Earlier in the evening the college had sponsored a welcome-back party on campus but the resident director of Commons A says that all the students were already in the residence and accounted for when the shooting occurred.
"The campus has a fulltime POST certified police force that patrols the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Gordon College Public Safety Chief Charles Head. "The safety of our students is our utmost concern."
Classes began Monday at the state college which has about 3,500 students--800 of whom live on campus.
Classes will resume as scheduled Wednesday morning.
