Fanfiction Frustrations

WARNING: This post talks about the weird stuff in fanfiction, including mature themes that may not be suitable for younger audiences.

I'm sure you've heard of it. Fanfiction. Or "Fanfic".

The dictionary says it is "fiction written by fans of a TV series, movie, etc., using existing characters and situations to develop new plots."

I'm sort of pulled in two directions with this on-going fight between "writers" and "fanfiction writers." I write some fanfiction, but most of it isn't an actual storyline. Usually it's a character study, or just a simple idea like "hey, wouldn't it be cool if...".

Sometimes I read fanfiction. Now...don't get me wrong. There is a TON of bad fanfics out there. In fact, I have only read about 5 good fanfiction stories (well, good in my view). The problem these days is, that you have to filter every other story.

My cry goes out to every fanfiction writer out there. Please stop writing slash! *gag* If you are going to write slash, then at least don't do it with characters that would NEVER be in that situation! The goal of fanfiction is to take EXISTING characters and place them in a different situation. Not to change the character's personality.

I'm tired of slash popping up. I'm tired of yaoi, hentai, lemons, limes, PWPs (plot, what plot?), and whatever else is out there. I want a STORY! I want a PLOT! I don't even want het stories!

I don't want Smallville characters desecrated with Clark/Lex, Chloe/Clark, and even Lex/Lex! Grow up and write a story! I don't want Lord of the Rings characters desecrated with Gimli/Legolas, Hobbits/Humans! *frustrated cry*

I implore someone to write something that has meaning, something that has a point to it. I don't want romance, I don't want slash, yaoi, hentai, ect... I want a good story that would be plausible in the series or movie itself.

Or better yet, just write an original story. This is why I love fictionpress.com. Original stories. Wonderful stuff. Just remember to filter.

So why do people have the need to write about that sort of junk? Is there something missing?

Here's an example of what yaoi can do to you. My dad was at the San Diego Convention a few years ago, and he was browsing the manga. In conventions, there are clearly marked sections such as "adult" or "yaoi" or "no one under 18". Not that anyone really cares. Dealers don't care as long as you give them money.

So dad was standing just on the edge of the yaoi section, and he heard a loud scream from behind him. "OH MY GOD! YAOI!" it yelled. Dad said that at this point he was mobbed by teenage girls trying to get to the yaoi section.

WHY?! Manga's not bad. It just has this horrible reputation for it all being yaoi and hentai. Yes. There is a difference. Yaoi is the most popular among girls, for some reason. Another term is BL, or Boy Love. Hentai is just sexual perversion. In Japan the rating "H" means sexual content. The term "hentai" came to refer to all sexual material in America.

Yuri is not as well known, though. This, as you might have guessed, is GL, or Girl Love. Yuri originated in Shojo (girl) material, but is now featured in Shonen (boy) works as well. In Japan, yuri concentrates on the relationships aspect, while in America, yuri concentrates on the bedroom aspect.

Now, I've probably just given you more information than you wanted to know (refer to warning at top of post).

Now, is anyone going to take up my challenge and write a good story?
